Madera County mail carrier has coronavirus, officials say

A U.S. Postal Service worker in Coarsegold has tested positive for COVID-19, the Madera County Department of Public Health said Friday.

The contracted mail carrier began feeling symptoms and stayed home for two days before getting tested, according to officials.

The department has contacted 12 people who were potentially infected by the mail carrier, a news release said.

Officials did not release the gender or age of the mail carrier with the new coronavirus.

Residents should not panic over the news, according to Dr. Simon Paul, public health officer with the Madera County Department of Public Health.

“While we cannot say the risk of contracting COVID-19 from mail is zero, there is no evidence to date of any transmission occurring from this route.” he said.

Madera County has reported 28 positive cases of COVID-19, including two deaths.

The Coarsegold Post Office was closed Friday and re-opens on Saturday, according to Meiko Patton, a communications program specialist with USPS.

“Customers can speak to the Coarsegold postmaster for any customer concerns,” he said. “They can also visit our website to see what we are doing.”
