A man was seriously injured Sunday morning after he was hit while crossing the street in southeast Fresno, police say.

The man, who is in his 40s, attempted to cross Chestnut Avenue just north of Kings Canyon Avenue around 8:30 a.m. when a southbound car swerved on Chestnut to avoid hitting a dog, according to police.

The maneuver caused the car, driven by a man in his 20s, to jump onto the northbound lanes and then strike the pedestrian, police said. He was taken to the hospital for serious head injuries.

A portion of Chestnut Avenue was shut down due to the investigation. It reopened just before 11 a.m.

Neither men were immediately identified. The driver was not expected to face charges, police said.
