Woman killed by train in southwest Fresno didn’t respond to its horn, police say

A woman was killed after she was hit by a train in southeast Fresno on Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

The woman was walking near Butler and East avenues around 5 p.m. when a BNSF Railway train heading south hit her, said police Lt. Bill Dooley.

Paramedics found her unresponsive and she was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead from a head injury, Dooley said. Her identity has not been released.

The conductor told police the crew saw the woman walking on the east side of the tracks and blew the train’s horn. But she did not respond, Dooley said.

She didn’t throw herself in front of the train, but it appeared she was not paying attention, police said.
