One dead in inmate attack at Corcoran’s Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, officials say
One inmate was killed and a second injured in an attack at the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran on Thursday.
A third man, identified at 41-year-old Jonathan Watson, is suspected in the death, according to a news release sent Friday by the California Department of Corrections.
Watson attacked the two men with a weapon, leaving both with multiple head wounds, according to the release. Medical staff on site provided life-saving measures and the victims were transported to a local medical center.
David Bobb, 48, died en route to the facility; the second man remains in critical condition.
Watson had been at the prison since 2009 and was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and intentionally discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury or death.
Bobb was also serving a life sentence, for aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old.
Officers from the facility and the Kings County Coroner’s Office are investigating, according to the release.
The facility, which opened in Corcoran in in 1997, houses more than 5,400 inmates and specializes in substance abuse treatment.
