According to the latest national rankings, Fresno’s continued problem with sexual transmitted disease has not gone away.

The Fresno metro area ranks 59th in the United States when it comes to cities with the highest STD rates.

Fresno also ranks third among California cities — behind only San Francisco and Bakersfield, according to data organized by Innerbody.com and statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention..

California, by the way, leads all states with the most cities in the top 100 with seven.

How bad are STDs in Fresno?

For every 100,000 people in the Fresno area, there were 979 reported cases of STDs, according to the Innerbody.com chart.

Baltimore tops the nation with an STD case rate of 2,004, followed by Jackson, Miss., at 1,872, Philadelphia at 1,822 and San Francisco 1,754.

Bakersfield was just ahead of Fresno for the second highest STD rate in California and ranked 53rd in the country at 1,046.

Other California cities to hit the top-100 STD chart: No. 69 Los Angeles (914 STD rate), No. 78 Sacramento (875), No. 89 San Diego (819) and No. 95 Riverside (800).

According to the California Department of Public Heath, the number of STD cases in Fresno County remains nearly as alarmingly high in 2018 (the last year data was collected and released) as it was in 2017.

For Fresno County, the number of cases of chlamydia from 2017 to 2018 went from 7,171 to 7,140.

Gonorrhea cases were at 2,247 then 2,250.

And total early syphilis dropped from 535 to 368.

STD prevention

The CDC estimates there are 20 million new STD infections in the United States.

The CDC points out ways the STDs can be avoided, including practicing abstinence, correctly using condoms, having fewer partners, and getting vaccinated.

Many STDs don’t have symptoms but can still cause health problems, the CDC added.
