This WWII veteran was swindled out of his savings. Surprise donation followed in Fresno

World War II veteran Floyd Smith received a special gift Wednesday.

Beltone Hearing Care Center in northeast Fresno presented the 92-year-old with a free hearing aid after learning Smith was swindled out of his savings last year. Smith previously said he loaned $10,000 to an acquaintance who never paid him back.

The thoughtful donation has gone a long way in improving the veteran’s hearing and morale.

Smith on Wednesday called it a blessing.

He said his old hearing aid repeatedly fell out of his ears and broke, and that now he can hear “perfectly clear.”

“You lovely people are helping me,” Smith told Beltone staff.

Others who heard about Smith’s drained savings raised money for the veteran, presenting him with a check last year for more than what he lost.

Beltone Hearing Care Center received an Amaze hearing aid to give to a deserving community member in recognition for the Fresno business being chosen by Beltone headquarters as the regional winner of a food drive. Beltone Central California has six offices, stretching from Sonora to Visalia.
