A 21-year-old drunk driver who sped through a red light, killing a father of six was sentenced to seven years and eight months on Tuesday.

Gustavo Blanco of Fresno was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence after his blue Chevrolet Cruz crashed into a gray Toyota Tercel driven by 40-year-old Shawn Milton. The crash happened on July 20 at Maple and Kings Canyon avenues. A passenger in Milton’s car was also seriously injured.

Blanco initially pleaded not guilty but later changed his plea to guilty.

During his sentencing Tuesday, Milton’s girlfriend and several family members said they are still heartbroken over his death. Amanda Boos, who was seven months pregnant with their child at the time of the crash, said she has battled deep depression since his death.

“It is a day to day struggle to fight the desire to stay in bed,” she said. “And I am trying my best to stay strong and not fall apart. My children need me to comfort them through their sadness.”

Boos said Milton’s passenger the night of the crash chose not to come to Blanco’s sentencing. He told her it was too difficult.

“He tells me he is not ready to see the person who is responsible for his dear friend dying,” Boos said. “He is also struggling with depression and PTSD.”

Two of Milton’s daughters also spoke. Cerenity Milton, 8, and Harmony Milton, 9, said they miss their father very much.

“I miss him with all my heart,” Harmony said. “And I’m sad I did not get to say goodbye but I know he is in a better place.”

Blanco’s attorney Nicholas Reyes asked the judge for leniency, saying his client did not have a criminal history, is willing to take responsibility and is extremely remorseful.

Blanco wiped tears away from his cheeks as Milton’s relatives spoke.

Judge Adolfo Corona took Blanco’s guilty plea into account as well as his lack of a criminal history and 10 letters of support submitted on his behalf.

Prosecutor Bob Whalen asked for the maximum of 11 years, and eight months. Corona settled in the middle at seven years and eight months.

“I wish this event had never happened,” Corona said.
