Interstate 5 shut down at Grapevine; Highway 58 closed, too

Interstate 5, the main route from the central San Joaquin Valley to Southern California, remained closed due to snow on the Grapevine at the summit of the 4,160-foot Tejon Pass Thursday evening, Caltrans reported.

The route was closed Thursday morning, and Caltrans said there was no estimated reopening time because of uncertain conditions.

Highway 58, the main route to Las Vegas for Central California residents, was closed early Friday after Caltrans tried to reopen it for a few hours Thursday evening. With only one lane each way, going was slow and eventually the road was closed again.

Travelers heading to Los Angeles were advised to take coastal routes such as Highway 41 to Highway 101.

Highway 58 was closed about 13 miles east of Bakersfield. Highway 178, which connects to the east side of the Sierra and U.S. 395, remained open, but chain controls were in effect.
