Students and staff at S. Ben Benevidez Elementary School in Parlier were evacuated from the campus for about an hour as firefighters investigated a possible gas leak.

A teacher and four students complained of dizziness when an odor of gas was detected at the school, according to Cal Fire’s Fresno County firefighters who were called to the scene. Emergency medical technicians and Parlier police also went to the school. The teacher and students were evaluated by medics, but none required hospitalization.

Fresno County Fire Battalion Chief Seth Brown said the gas leak was reported at about 1:50 p.m. A boiler at the school was the apparent cause of the odor and was shut down for repairs, and the campus was reopened at about 2:45 p.m.

The school has an enrollment of about 560 students in kindergarten through sixth grades.
