Man walking on Highway 99 hit and killed, CHP says. His car was stranded

A 29-year-old man walking against traffic on Highway 99 near Clovis Avenue before dawn Friday was struck and killed by a van, the California Highway Patrol reported.

He was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Matthew Rodrigues. His hometown is unknown.

Officers determineed that Rodrigues was a stranded driver whose white Nissan Murano had been disabled on the southbound side of the freeway with no gas and a flat tire, CHP said. It was unclear why he was walking in the third lane on the northbound side of Highway 99.

CHP had assisted Rodrigues earlier in the night before he was killed.

Northbound lanes were partially blocked as officers investigated the 4:34 a.m. crash, but were reported open by 6:37 a.m.

Jerome A. Fritas, 61, of Hanford was driving the 2006 Dodge van in the third lane at about 60 mph and did not see the pedestrian in dark clothing, CHP said, before fatally striking him. Fritas stayed on the scene and called 911.

Rodrigues was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP said.
