A cool weather system that brought showers and wind gusts to the central San Joaquin Valley is expected to continue through the weekend and into next week, according to the National Weather Service. In the Sierra Nevada, a winter storm warning was issued through Friday.

Fresno’s high Thursday is expected to be an unusually mild 67 degrees, below the weather service’s listed average of 70 degrees, with a low Thursday night of 51 and a high Friday of 71. The showers and thunderstorms are expected to occur before 4 p.m.

The cool weather was brought to the region by a low-pressure center parked off the California coast. So far, accumulations of rainfall on the Valley floor have been moderate, with Fresno recording nearly a third of an inch by 5 a.m.

In the Sierra, the storm warning called for heavy snow above 5,000 feet, along with gusty winds. Accumulations could total 12 inches.

There are several types of clouds, these four are the core of them all.
