Community leaders came together Saturday afternoon to celebrate the grand opening of Saint Rest Plaza in west Fresno.

The plaza, a dream for many years on vacant property next to Saint Rest Baptist Church at Elm and Reverend Chester Riggins avenues, is envisioned as a space for a farmers market, performances and other community activities. At its center is a mural designed and painted by city employee Kara Hammerschmidt.

“We seek to provide west Fresno with a plaza that will generate and stimulate excitement in our city,” said Saint Rest Baptist Church Pastor DJ Criner.

Saturday’s grand opening brought together representatives of several organizations that helped make the plaza a reality including the city of Fresno, Saint Rest Baptist Church, Fresno County Economic Development Corporation, Every Neighborhood Partnership and the Fresno Police Activities League.
