Baby involved in major Grapevine pileup last weekend has died
The 21-month-old baby involved in the major crash on Interstate 5 last Saturday has died, Bakersfield TV station 23ABC reported Saturday morning.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed to the TV station that the baby died on Wednesday, days after a major pileup involving multiple vehicles on the I-5 along the Grapevine shut down traffic and injured several people.
The crash involved at least 10 separate collisions that stretched for about 4 miles, according to the CHP. Images surfaced online of the mayhem, showing cars overturned, burned and crushed by other vehicles. At least 16 people were transported to area hospitals.
The CHP said the baby had been taken to Los Angeles Children’s Hospital in critical condition, but did not survive. The baby’s name or city of origin was not released.
The CHP believes the crash was caused by thick fog that formed and caught drivers off-guard. Speed may have also played a factor. The CHP offices in Bakersfield could not be reached for comment.
