Baby saved from car that flipped into canal near Los Banos

An 11-month-old girl was taken to a Fresno hospital as a precaution Thursday afternoon after being pulled from a car that was sinking in a Santa Nella canal, a CHP officer said.

Sgt. Matthew Morrall said a green Toyota Camry, driven by Roy Lozano, 41, of National City, was heading east around 3:30 p.m. on Fahey Road near Highway 33, traveling about 35 mph.

The car went off the roadway and overturned into Cherokee Canal. Lozano and passengers Sergio Lozano, 34, of Los Banos, and the mother of the child, Myra Montiel, 25, of Los Banos, escaped from the vehicle. The two men rescued the child, officers said.

Morrall said the child was on dry land crying when law enforcement arrived. The baby was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno to be checked for possible internal injuries.

No one else involved in the wreck required medical attention, Morrall said.
