Visalia man hurt, dog killed in garage fire

Visalia firefighters battled an early-morning residential fire Tuesday on the 4200 block of West Judy Avenue that burned a resident and killed a pet dog.

The fire started shortly after 5:20 a.m. Responding firefighters saw heavy fire and smoke from a detached garage behind a home in one of Visalia’s southwest neighborhoods. Fire crews found a man who lived inside the home out on the curb with moderate burns. The man awoke just as the fire had started and was able to escape.

The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes. No one else was hurt, but a small dog died trapped inside the garage as it caught fire. The man was treated at Community Regional Medical Center for burns to his arms and face.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
