Woman using crosswalk hit by SUV on Blackstone Avenue in Fresno

A 29-year-old woman was taken to a hospital after being hit by an SUV while she was using a crosswalk in Fresno on Wednesday.

The incident happened about 2:45 p.m. at Blackstone and Garland avenues on the east side of Blackstone.

Fresno police Sgt. Gary Beer said two women were walking south when they entered the pedestrian crossing at Garland. The driver of a Cadillac Escalade was driving west and had stopped and was preparing to turn north onto Blackstone. The driver had her head turned left when the pedestrians entered the sidewalk. When there was a break in traffic, the driver turned right and hit one woman in the sidewalk, dragging her about 25 feet.

The victim appears to have suffered moderate injuries, and police are checking at the hospital to see if injuries were major.

The driver, 65, stopped her SUV.

“She’s very distraught,” Beer said.

The case is under investigation, but it does not appear the driver will be cited, he said.

Pedestrians have a duty to stay out of the road until is is safe, he said. When crossing in front of a vehicle, it’s a good idea to make eye contact with the driver, Beer added.

The second woman walking with the victim was not hit.
