A man who was fishing with a friend died after falling into a canal near Firebaugh, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.

Horacio Silva, a 42-year-old from Fresno, fell into the canal at Douglas and Nees avenues around 6 p.m Monday, according to sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti. Silva’s friend called 911.

Rescue crews were able to pull Silva out, but he died at a hospital.

Canals can be dangerous to fish in because the banks are sometimes steep and the currents can be fast.
