Fresno’s Highway City center receives $20,000 revitalization grant

A Fresno neighborhood center will receive a $20,000 grant as the winner of the national Parks Build Community campaign, sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association and The Walt Disney Company.

The Fresno Life and Environmental Science Program at the Highway City Neighborhood Center, at 5141 N. State Ave., near Shaw Avenue and Highway 99 in northwest Fresno, will receive renovations and refurbishments to its aging facility, according to Parks, After School, Recreation and Community Services Director Manuel Mollinedo. The program will be transformed into a new science workshop facility, he said.

The grant will provide funding for hands-on learning excursions along the San Joaquin River. Thanks to online voting from the community throughout Earth Month in April, the Highway City LES program received more votes than two other Fresno Parks — Ted C. Wills Educational Garden and Chandler Park.

The Highway City LES program was one of 15 projects selected across the country. For a full list of project winners, visit tp://www.parksbuildcommunity.org/.
