Couple killed in Porterville crash were from Tulare

A man and woman killed in a solo-vehicle accident in Porterville were a man and wife from Tulare, officials said Monday.

They have been identified as James Ray, 62, and Maria Ray, 58, the Tulare County Coroner’s Office said.

The crash happened about 9:30 p.m. Friday along northbound Highway 65 just north of Olive Avenue, when the 2007 Saturn they were in swerved off the roadway and down an embankment, overturned, struck a tree and caught fire.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, the California Highway Patrol said.
