A commercial plane and drone were flying way too close to each other
Shocking viral video out of Las Vegas shows a drone flying dangerously close to a passenger plane in the process of landing at McCarran International Airport.
The incident is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration, with the close encounter a reminder of the dangers of irresponsible flying of drones.
Regulations require drones to fly no higher than 400 feet, according to FAA regulations. It is unclear how high the drone was flying.
But the 27-second clip shows a Frontier Airlines jet passing beneath the drone as the plane headed toward the airport. The precise altitude of the aircraft also is not known.
When the video was taken and who was flying the drone remains in question, too.
The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industry and other hobbyists alike have condemned the uncomfortably close encounter, according to the Air Transport World’s website.
The ATW site stated: “By all appearances, this is clearly and explicitly an illegal and reckless flight by a drone. The unmanned aircraft is above 400 ft., it is near an airport, and it is above another, manned aircraft—all gross violations of the rules that govern unmanned aviation.”
