Tulare County said two more women have died from flu-related infections, bringing to four the number of women in the county who have died this year from a severe flu that is widespread nationwide.

Fresno and Kings counties have each had one flu-related death. Statewide, at least 97 people in California have died of flu complications thus far this season. Flu deaths of people age 65 and older are not reported.

“It is with great regret that I am again informing the community of deaths from influenza,” said Dr. Karen Haught, Tulare County health officer. “The flu can have serious, life-threatening effects, including death; community members should get their vaccination as soon as possible.”

Health officials say it is not too late to get a flu shot. They also emphasize frequent hand washing with soap and water. And if you experience flu-like symptoms, stay home and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Influenza symptoms include fever, cough, muscle aches, sore throat, chills and headache. Health officials say if you have symptoms of the flu, call your doctor promptly to find out if antiviral treatment is needed. Pregnant women, people with diabetes, asthma, heart disease, kidney disease and parents of children age 5 and younger should talk to their health-care providers about antiviral medication.

And health officials advise seeking emergency medical care if there are signs of serious illness, which include shortness of breath, abdominal pain, dizziness, confusion, vomiting and dehydration.

Children may experience hyperventilation or difficulty breathing, vomiting, dehydration, lethargy, irritability, restlessness, or bluish skin color. And babies may experience a decreased appetite and dehydration, bluish color, fast or irregular breathing, irritability or excessive sleepiness. Also, any infant under 3 months of age with a temperature over 100.4 should be evaluated by a physician right away.

Anyone whose symptoms improve but return with fever or a worsened cough should get help right away.
