A pedestrian was killed Saturday after he was hit by a car on westbound Highway 180 near the Van Ness Avenue exit in downtown Fresno, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Calls to 911 reported a man getting hit, said CHP Sgt. Mike Trenholm. When officers arrived just after 5 p.m. they found the man dead on the third lane of the highway.

Trenholm said the man was on foot before he was hit. His age and identity were not immediately known.

Traffic was backed up from the Van Ness Avenue exit to the Highway 41 ramps, Trenholm said. Vehicles were still being allowed to continue their route westbound on Highway 180 through the Van Ness Avenue exit ramp. Trenholm said a coroner was expected to arrive and remove the man before the closed traffic lanes could be reopened.

The vehicle that hit the man did stay at the scene and investigators were questioning the driver, Trenholm said. Alcohol or drugs don’t appear to be a factor in the accident, he added.
