Child in critical condition after being hit by car in Coalinga

A child is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon while crossing a street in Coalinga, police reported.

Police and firefighters responded to Forest Avenue and Fourth Street about 3:30 p.m. for a report that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, Coalinga police said in a Facebook post.

Officers learned a vehicle headed west on Forest Avenue struck a child who was trying to cross the street. The driver stopped and tried to help the child until first responders arrived.

The child was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno and was in critical condition.

Police did not identify the driver or the child in the collision, which remains under investigation.
