9/11 memorial events scheduled in central San Joaquin Valley
Events are planned in the central San Joaquin Valley through Monday commemorating the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including:
Saturday
Visalia: Patriot Day Tribute & Family Festival will honor first-responders and includes a K-9 demonstration, military and veteran groups, local and state officials and legislators, children’s activities and more. 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sons of Italy Lodge Park, 4211 W. Goshen Ave., 559-688-4323.
Monday
Fresno: Ceremony at Duncan Polytechnical High School will honor local veterans, police officers and firefighters featuring the school’s Air Force Junior ROTC color guard and cadets, as well as leadership students lining the main hall holding American flags. 8-8:45 a.m. 4330 E. Garland Ave.
Clovis: Join honored guests from FDNY and armed forces, as well as local law enforcement, fire and emergency personnel at the California 9/11 Memorial for a program to remember and honor fallen and surviving heroes. Ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. and the memorial will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pelco by Schneider Electric, 3500 Pelco Way, 559-292-1981.
Lemoore: Remember the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks (including Lt. Cmdr. Vince Tolbert of Lemoore, killed in the Pentagon) and commemorate those currently serving and fighting the war on terrorism. 9 a.m. on the lawn in front of Freedom Walk, east of NAS Lemoore headquarters, 700 Avenger Ave.
Madera: Guest of honor is John Cook, who enlisted in the Navy after the attacks and served eight years as an aviation structural mechanic. After being diagnosed with PTSD he learned about Our Heroes’ Dreams, a nonprofit improving the lives of soldiers and their families. He will tell his story, introduce his canine companion and discuss how service dogs can help veterans. 10 a.m. B-K Lighting, 40429 Brickyard Drive.
