Travelers on Highway 99 through Fresno will be brought to a stop Sunday between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. as Pacific Gas & Electric Co. workers take down power cables.

Southbound off-ramps from Ashlan Avenue and Golden State Boulevard will be closed for the duration of the seven-hour project, according to Caltrans.

However, to keep the flow of traffic moving, California Highway Patrol will give five-minute breaks from Shaw and Olive avenues to let traffic continue down the highway. The breaks will be given when drivers have been at a stop on the highway for no more than five minutes.

On the northbound side of the highway, breaks will begin at Olive Avenue and traffic will be held until Shaw Avenue. The northbound off-ramp at Golden State Boulevard will be closed until 9 a.m. Five-minute breaks northbound will be in effect.

PG&E will be taking down power cables for the State Route 99 Realignment Project, said Caltrans spokesman Sam Yniguez. He said the power cables will be on the roadway, the reason for the blockage.
