Members of gay Asian immigrant group demonstrate at Nunes’ Clovis office
Members of a national gay Asian immigrant group gathered Sunday in Old Town Clovis for a loud but peaceful protest at Rep. Devin Nunes’ office.
Members of the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance gathered outside of Nunes’ office to demand that he reject the Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment Act, support the Affordable Care Act, and distance himself from what they believe are President Trump’s ant-immigrant and anti-LGBT policies.
About 50 demonstrators turned out with signs saying “Save our Health Care” and “Down with the RAISE act.” People driving by honked in support of the protestors as they marched down Clovis Avenue from Nunes’ office on Third Street and circled back from Fifth Street.
“We’re here to seek fairness for all of California,” said Glenn Magpantay, executive director of the alliance. “We are here to protest Rep. Nunes and his closeness to President Trumps’ anti- immigrant and anti-gay policies. We have people coming from all over because of this congressman’s policies and positions that will affect all of us across the west coast.”
Lina Khoeur, 19, Clovis resident, spoke to the crowd of protestors about her own family, which would affected by the RAISE Act.
“I’m out here because this is my home, this is my community that I’ve been with day in and day out,” Khoeur said. “What this RAISE Act is trying to do is make it for them to not be there and make it for me to not have anyone to come home to.”
