Nearly 30 customers of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in Old Town Clovis were expected to be without power into late Friday night.

About 8:45 p.m., the power went out in an area around Fifth Street and Clovis Avenue, PG&E’s Karly Hernandez said.

Only minutes earlier, Clovis Fire had been called to the area. That report, at 8:39 p.m., stated a transformer at Fifth and Pollasky Avenue was smoking.

Firefighters wrapped up their work 40 minutes later. PG&E workers were still investigating what went wrong with their equipment, though Hernandez said it was traced to a transformer.

Restoration was expected about 11:30 p.m., according to the PGE.com outage map.
