Man struck by train late Wednesday was from Riverdale, coroner’s office says

A man struck by a train late Wednesday night has been identified as Frank Rocha Vaz, 24, of Riverdale by the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.

He was struck by a train on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks about 11:45 p.m. near Laton.

Sheriff’s dispatchers reported that a freight train engineer said the train had struck a person. The engineer reported seeing someone lying across the tracks as the train approached Fowler and Letson Avenues, but the train was unable to stop before striking the person.

The train was stopped and Vaz was found to be dead.

Fresno County Sheriff’s detectives are trying to learn more about Vaz. Anyone who knew him or knew of his whereabouts before his death is asked to call Fresno County Sheriff’s detective Juan Galindo at 559-600-8215.
