A woman was in critical condition Monday morning after crashing into a power pole outside of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, said fire department Battalion Chief Tony Escobedo.

Authorities aren't sure how the woman crashed, but police think she may have been driving west on Belmont Street around 9:30 a.m. when she skidded and hit the pole near Teilman Avenue.

The woman was pinned, and firefighters used the Jaws Of Life to remove the car from the pole and to free her, said Escobedo.

She was taken to the hospital where she remains in critical condition. She was the only person in the car, said Escobedo.
