Madera County officials say the sinkhole near Oakhurst that closed Road 427 near Yosemite High School for two days was to reopen at 5 p.m. Thursday.

On Tuesday, the road was closed to traffic between Pierce Drive and Elliot Drive, except for residents. All businesses, schools, churches and residences in the area were still accessible.

While the surface opening was just over one square foot, the hole under it was far larger, and the visible pavement was not sufficiently supported.

The site of the sinkhole is where a culvert runs under the road.
