Man takes off pants and shirt, tries to set himself on fire in Tower District

A man was taken to Community Regional Medical Center Wednesday night after he tried to light himself on fire in the Tower District, police reported.

Lt. Joe Gomez said the incident took place about 10 a.m. near Palm and McKinley avenues. An officer reported that upon arriving, he noticed the man had taken off his pants and shirt before he tried to burn himself.

Asked why he had tried to injure himself, he replied he did not think he did, Gomez said. The man also was confused about where he lived or where he was going.

He was taken into custody for a psychiatric evaluation.
