Onslaught of new COVID-19 cases eases in Fresno, Valley. See the latest numbers
New COVID-19 cases in Fresno County and neighboring central San Joaquin Valley counties decreased this week for the first time in eight weeks, marking at least a slight reprieve from what has been a steady march upward since April.
The Fresno County Department of Public Health reported 1,869 new coronavirus infections this week, down from 2,400 last week. It’s the first drop in week-to-week figures since the week ending April 23.
This week’s Valleywide total of new cases also fell compared to last week. Across Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced and Tulare counties, state and county health officials reported 3,601 new infections confirmed through laboratory testing, down from almost 4,600 in the week ending June 11.
The cumulative number of people who have contracted the virus at some point since the first local cases in March 2020 now stands at 242,214 in Fresno County and 511,889 Valleywide. The death toll from the virus is 2,768 lives lost in Fresno County and 5,955 Valleywide.
County-by-county totals of confirmed cases and fatalities in the region since March 2020 are:
- Fresno County: 242,214 cases, 2,768 deaths.
- Kings County: 53,497 cases, 448 deaths.
- Madera County: 37,867 cases, 381 deaths.
- Mariposa County: 3,536 cases, 35 deaths.
- Merced County: 64,734 cases, 827 deaths.
- Tulare County: 110,041 cases, 1,496 deaths.
