COVID-19 update: Fresno adds 74 new cases, Valley reaches 900 deaths

The California Department of Public Health on Tuesday reported Fresno County added 74 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and seven deaths, bringing the total to 27,843 infections and 362 deaths since the pandemic began.

The county reports coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Fresno County reported on Tuesday that 89 people are hospitalized, while a total of 17,496 have recovered.

As of Tuesday, there have been a total of 784,324 infections and 15,071 deaths, according to the California Department of Public Health.

Fresno County had a new case rate of 6.4% and a positivity rate of 3.2% as of Tuesday, sitting in the purple tier, according to the state’s blueprint for reopening. To move up into the next tier, counties must have fewer than seven new cases per day per 100,000 people and have a testing positivity rate of 8% per 100,000 people.

There are four tiers in the state’s color-coded system, with purple being the most restrictive and yellow being the least restrictive. Within the central San Joaquin Valley, Fresno Madera, Merced, Tulare, and Kings counties were in the purple stage as of Tuesday. Mariposa County is in the yellow stage, which means it has less than one reported new case a day per 100,000 people and has a testing positivity rate of less than 2%.

Latest San Joaquin Valley coronavirus cases

Valleywide, the state on Tuesday reported 202 new cases and 11 new deaths, bringing the total number of infections to 64,478 and totaling a whopping 900 deaths. There are 214 hospitalizations, and a total of 49,224 people have recovered.

Madera County: 33 new cases as of Tuesday, 4,424 to date, three additional deaths, 65 to date; 27 hospitalizations; 3,828 people recovered.

Mariposa County: No new cases reported Tuesday, 75 to date; no additional deaths, two to date; no hospitalizations; 73 people recovered.

Merced County: 19 new cases as of Monday, 8,803 to date; three additional deaths, 140 to date; 54 hospitalizations; 7,846 people recovered.

Tulare County: 95 new cases as of Tuesday, 15,782 to date; one additional death, 257 to date; 49 hospitalizations; 15,043 people recovered.

Kings County: 104 new cases reported as of Monday, 7,534 to date; no additional deaths, 77 to date; 21 hospitalizations; 4,938 people recovered.
