Fresno County coronavirus hospitalizations take a turn. Valley adds 4 new deaths

Hospitalizations of confirmed coronavirus patients in Fresno County went up for the first time in 11 days according to new data released Thursday afternoon by the California Department of Public Health.

The hospitalizations went from 233 on Tuesday to 245 on Wednesday.

There was a bit of good news: one less intensive-care COVID-19 patient, down to 61 compared to 62 the previous day.

State health officials reported Thursday 369 new positive patients in Fresno County to push the overall total to 22,167 of the coronavirus since the pandemic started in March.

Those numbers are through Wednesday evening, the latest available from the state.

Health officials did not add any deaths to the total of 205. Fresno County fatalities are usually reported on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Of its infected, Fresno County has seen 9,172 recoveries. Those numbers will be updated Friday.

Earlier this week, the central San Joaquin Valley surpassed 50,000 total coronavirus cases.

Those cases include Fresno, Kings, Tulare, Madera, Merced and Mariposa counties. Across the region, a total of 626 deaths have been reported.

COVID-19 cases in the central San Joaquin Valley

Tulare County surpassed 13,000 cases with 186 patients testing positive. The total now stands at 13,022. No new deaths were reported, keeping the total to 208. A total of 11,782 patients have recovered.

Merced County added 105 new cases, including two deaths. The total went up to 7,334 cases, while the number of deaths is 99.

Madera County reported two new deaths to bring the tally to 49. The county added 42 new cases, bringing the number up to 3,278.

Mariposa County reported early Thursday that four new cases put the overall number to 69. The county has two deaths since the pandemic began.

Kings County reported 28 new cases to reach to 5,659. No new deaths were reported. Total numbers include people in nursing homes and inmates in Kings County facilities.

More than 5.5 million people in the country have tested positive for COVID-19, including more than 173,000 fatal cases, according to The COVID Tracking Project and Johns Hopkins University CSSE.

Free COVID-19 testing at Roeding Park

United Health Centers is providing free COVID-19 testing 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Roeding Park. Testing is open to the public, though preregistration is required by calling 800-492-4227. Results will be given in three to five days.

Fresno City Councilmember Miguel Arias will also provide free face masks and food distribution at the event.
