Fresno County adds 3 more coronavirus-related deaths, 325 cases

The central San Joaquin Valley’s six-county region has more 17,000 cases to date and at least 276 deaths.

The central San Joaquin Valley is at an all-time high for confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized with 326 as of Monday. The previous high was the day before at 304. Fifty-eight of those patients are in intensive-care, according to numbers from the California Department of Public Health.

Most of California is seeing a spike in coronavirus activity that began in mid-June. Local health leaders attributed the beginning of that spike to too many group gatherings among friends and extended family members, such as birthday and graduation parties, with little social distancing being observed beginning around Memorial Day weekend in late May.

In response to elevated case numbers and hospitalizations, Gov. Gavin Newsom last week ordered 19 counties including Fresno to immediately close all bars and a number of indoor businesses for at least three weeks.

Madera County was added to that list on Monday. Fresno, Tulare and Kings have been on the list since last week.
