Reopening for Fresno County nail salons, personal care businesses on hold for two weeks

Manicurists who have been idle since the coronavirus prompted sweeping stay-at-home orders almost three months ago will still have to wait a few more weeks before they’ll get to reopen in Fresno County.

The state of California issued guidance late Thursday setting June 19 as the reopening date for nail salons and businesses offering cosmetology services like facials, skin care, electrolysis and waxing, as well as tattoo and body-piercing parlors.

However, Fresno County interim health officer Dr. Rais Vohra said Fresno County will wait until June 26 — one extra week — before giving those establishments a green light.

That’s the same date family entertainment centers and movie theaters will be allowed to reopen, Vohra said Friday.

Vohra said the extra week is to give the county “time for our team and our environmental health experts to work with these industries to make sure they have safe practices … to help get them opened up.”

“We want to make it as safe as possible for employees, as well as the clients and customers who use those services,” Vohra added.

Friday was also the day that a range of other businesses – closed since mid-March as “non-essential” – could resume operation with modified safeguards and regulations including limited capacity, social distancing, and masks for employees and staff.

Those include wineries and bars, gyms and fitness clubs, and cardroom casinos and off-site betting businesses, as well as zoos, museums, campgrounds, RV parks and outdoor recreation businesses.
