Three more COVID-19 deaths in Fresno County as total cases rise above 1,000

Three more coronavirus-related deaths were reported Wednesday in Fresno County, where the total number of confirmed cases rose above 1,000.

Fresno County added 30 new confirmed cases, bringing the total number of infections to 1,014, according to county officials.

A total of 13 people in Fresno County have died in connection with the outbreak.

“Those 13 fatalities are, again, in some of the elderly population,” said Dr. Rais Vohra, interim health officer for the Fresno County Department of Public Health during Wednesday’s media briefing.

The last four deaths involved individuals ages 74, 86, 89, and 79, he said. The county’s public health department, he said, will soon release information on fatality trends in Fresno County.

Of the total infections, 652 cases were active as of late Wednesday, while 349 had recovered, and 143 patients were hospitalized. The number of patients who had recovered in Fresno County increased by 16 from Tuesday.

A total of 11,715 people have been tested in Fresno County. Four-hundred and thirty-three of the total infections were acquired through close contact, while another 400 were acquired through spread in the community, or the origin of infection remained unknown.

Another 133 cases were under investigation, and 48 were related to travel, according to the county’s dashboard.

Merced County on Wednesday reported its first infant COVID-19 case. The child is 5 months old, county officials said in a news release.

Merced County has reported 12 COVID-19 cases among children under the age of 18.

As of late Wednesday, Merced County had a total of 180 cases, of which 67 remained active, while 109 patients had recovered. Four patients have died in the county.

Madera County reported having no additional confirmed cases as a late Wednesday — making it the second day in a row with no new cases. The county has a total of 69 cases, of which 22 are active, 45 patients have recovered, and two have died.

Mariposa County also hadn’t recorded additional positive cases as of Wednesday morning. The county has 15 cases, of which 12 patients have recovered.

Kings County, as of late Wednesday, reported an additional 23 positive cases, pushing the county’s total to 348 infections. Of the total number of cases, one patient has died, and 103 others had recovered.

Across California, the number of positive coronavirus cases as of Wednesday climbed to 71, 141, and 2,934 deaths. Of the total cases statewide, a total of 3,301 patients were hospitalized, and of those, 1,075 were in intensive care units.

Another 1,244 patients were hospitalized and were suspected of having COVID-19, and those patients, 239 were in intensive care units.
