Watch: Gavin Newsom holds his daily coronavirus press conference
California Gov. Gavin Newsom delivered remarks on the coronavirus pandemic at a 12:30 p.m. press conference today. Watch a recording of the livestream by clicking on the video:
Newsom on Wednesday announced the formation of a $125 million program, partly funded by philanthropy, that would provide financial aid to undocumented immigrants affected by the coronavirus, the first of its kind in the country.
The program will provide $500 for individuals and up to $1,000 for families.
“Regardless of your status, documented or undocumented, there are people in need. And this is a state that steps up always to support those in need, regardless of status,” Newsom said.
The governor also said Wednesday that he is allowing undocumented immigrants to have presumptive eligibility, through the state’s Medi-Cal system, to get tested, and treated, at community clinics.
Newsom said that that was not only “the right, moral and ethical” thing to do, but also the most economic thing to do as well.
