Fresno students to get same grades they had last quarter - unless they want to improve

Fresno Unified School District Superintendent Bob Nelson updated students and parents on graduations and how grades will be issued on Thursday afternoon.

Third-quarter grades will be the final grades for all students unless they choose to improve their grades, Nelson said. Seniors will have until May 22 to improve their scores, and all other students have until June 1.

No grade will drop below third-quarter grades, Nelson said. Teachers will give out “A,” “B,” “C,” and “F” grades. A “D” will be changed to a passing grade.

“This grading option was outlined in the guidance provided by the California Department of Education on April 1, and we believe this decision gives the widest set of students the opportunity and incentive to connect through distance learning and to improve their grades during this unprecedented time.,” Nelson said.

Nelson also assured seniors will graduate as long as they’re on track, and they will have opportunities to make up credits.

“Seniors, we are still actively working to determine what graduation will look like this year, but know that you will get your gowns, your medals, your diplomas, and we will celebrate you,” he added.

Board members voted on April 1 to keep all schools in the district closed until the end of the school year.

Nelson issued his statement in multiple languages, which you can find below.
