Lemoore sailor in isolation after testing positive for the coronavirus
A Lemoore sailor tested positive for the coronavirus, the Lemoore Naval Air Station said in a post on Facebook on Thursday.
The sailor has been in isolation since testing for the virus on March 25. On Wednesday, the test came back positive.
“The Navy is committed to taking every measure possible to protect the health and safety of our workforce and their families. We remain in close coordination with state and federal authorities to ensure the well-being of our personnel and local communities,” Lemoore NAS said in a statement.
Lemoore NAS said the workspace is being cleaned and sanitized by contracted professionals.
The sailor is being quarantined at home and showing mild symptoms.
The news comes as hundreds of personnel from LNAS deal with coronavirus at sea: The USS Theodore Roosevelt and its 4,800 sailors has been docked in Guam for several days following an outbreak of coronavirus cases among the crew. The Navy is evacuating up to 2,700 sailors from the ship and putting them in hotels or other accommodations in Guam to stop the spread of the virus.
Lemoore-based squadrons of F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jets are aboard the Roosevelt.
The Navy fired the commander of the Roosevelt because a letter in which he pleaded for help combatting a coronavirus outbreak aboard ship was sent over an unsecure communications channel and became public, acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said Thursday.
