Another day brings big jump in Fresno County coronavirus cases
The Fresno County Department of Public Health announced 12 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, bringing the county total to 43 confirmed positive tests.
Health officials projected the number of COVID-19 cases will continue to rise as more lab work is processed and confirmed.
Of the 43 confirmed cases, 16 are travel-related, four person-to-person, four community-spread (unknown source) and 19 are under investigation.
Health officials said they are closely monitoring how many COVID-19 cases have emerged in the county since March 19.
That’s the day the city of Fresno’s shelter-in-place order went into effect, as well as when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a statewide stay-at-home order and closure of “nonessential businesses” to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Fresno Mayor Lee Brand extended the city’s restrictions for another two weeks and urged residents to stay home and only leave for essential trips through April 12.
As of Saturday evening, the number of people confirmed to have tested positive for coronavirus infection is 97 across Fresno, Kings, Madera, Merced and Tulare counties. The latest case of COVID-19 in the region was reported Saturday evening in Kings County. It is the second Kings County resident to be diagnosed with coronavirus. County health officials said the latest patient is being treated in isolation.
Two people – one in Madera County and one in Tulare County – have died from the disease.
