Here’s an up-to-date list on Fresno-area college closures, cancellations
The coronavirus pandemic is changing rapidly from day to day and has forced colleges to move to virtual instruction and cancel events. Here is a continuously updated list of what students at each college should know.
Fresno State
The university will not be holding its 2020 commencement ceremony as previously planned. “We will continue to explore how and when to celebrate Commencement 2020, depending on the quickly changing situation,” President Joseph I. Castro said in an email.
Students who paid the $51.50 fee for graduation will get back $34.50. The rest of the fee goes toward graduation evaluations, officials said in an email to students. Anyone who purchased a grad box will also get a refund for their cap, gown and tassel.
Student leaving from dormitories will receive a prorated refund for housing and meal plans.
Virtual instruction will continue through the end of the semester.
Fresno State Athletics has also canceled all organized team activities until at least April 13.
All international and non-essential domestic travel has been suspended for faculty and the campus has urged students not to travel.
All university events have been canceled or postponed.
Students can get a partial refund on their parking permits by emailing transportation@csufresno.edu by March 25 and including their name, ID number and permit number. The refund will be $23.25.
“Because California State University students will continue receiving instruction from CSU instructors, and the grades you will receive will ultimately lead to a CSU diploma, we will continue to charge tuition and mandatory system and campus-based fees for all enrolled students,” said Carolyn Coon, acting vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment and Dean of Students, and Debbie Astone, vice president for Administration and Chief Financial Officer.
State Center Community College District
State Center is the parent district of Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College, Madera Community College Center and Oakhurst Community College Center.
The district announced on March 23 that it was canceling the 2020 graduation ceremony for all colleges.
Chancellor Paul Parnell said in an email to students that colleges will instead hold virtual and remote celebrations, though he could not elaborate yet on what that would look like.
All courses have gone virtual for the rest of the spring semester and the summer semester, Parnell said.
All activities and events have been canceled district-wide through June.
Fresno Pacific University
The private Christian university announced Wednesday the postponement of its May 9 commencement.
All events with 10 or more people have been canceled, and all classes will move online until at least April 12, according to President Joseph Jones.
All athletic events are canceled. Residence halls and dining facilities remain open.
West Hills Community College District
West Hills campuses in Lemoore, Coalinga and its Firebaugh center are still continuing with a 2020 commencement ceremony as of Wednesday.
Most classes are moving online until at least April 24, according to Chancellor Stuart Van Horn. Sports activities are canceled.
All college-related travel is suspended and students are encouraged not to travel on their own.
