Man arrested after knife, belt assault outside Sonora grocery store

Sonora Police Department

A 38-year-old man was arrested after police say he threatened another man with a knife and assaulted him outside a grocery store early Tuesday morning.

Officers with the Sonora Police Department responded in the early morning hours of April 28 to the area of Grocery Outlet on Washington Street for a report of two men involved in a physical altercation, according to a department social media post.

When officers arrived, they located both individuals and began investigating what happened. Police determined that one of the men, identified as David Jacklich of the Mountain Ranch area, had followed the other man while making threatening statements.

Authorities said Jacklich then brandished a knife, causing the victim to fear for his safety. The victim attempted to leave the area, but Jacklich chased him and struck him multiple times with a belt.

The victim was ultimately able to subdue Jacklich until officers arrived, police said. Investigators determined the incident appeared to be unprovoked.

Jacklich was arrested and booked into the Tuolumne County Jail.

He faces charges including felony assault with a deadly weapon, felony criminal threats, misdemeanor brandishing a weapon and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
