Kings County groundwater agency to hold another workshop on how to register wells

After overwhelming farmer interest at a workshop held Tuesday on how to register wells with the Mid-Kings River Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA), the agency will hold another workshop on Friday.

Every seat was taken at a workshop held Tuesday, where about 70 landowners spent several hours learning how to navigate the GSA’s system.

The additional workshop will be held from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at the Kings County Government Center’s Ag Commissioner’s multipurpose room at 1400 W. Lacey Blvd.

No registration is required.

Landowners should bring a laptop or tablet and the verification code they should have received in a letter from Mid-Kings.

This registration process is separate from one required by the state Water Resources Control Board

Registration on the state system is required as a result of the Tulare Lake subbasin, which covers most of Kings County, being placed on probation for lacking an adequate groundwater plan back in 2024. Landowners must start reporting how much they pump to the state starting Friday, May 1.

Required fees of $300 per well and $20 per acre foot pumped are delayed until after a Kings County Superior Court Judge hears a request for a preliminary injunction against the fees on June 3 that was filed by the Kings County Farm Bureau.
