California’s return-to-office order begins. Which state jobs offer remote work?
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s return-to-office order is now in effect, requiring most California state employees to work from the office four days a week.
The policy, which took effect Wednesday, July 1, marks a major shift from the flexible telework arrangements many state workers have had since the COVID-19 pandemic.
It affects roughly 108,000 state employees.

Do California state jobs still offer remote work?
Despite Newsom’s return-to-office order, not every state job requires employees to be in the office full-time.
Several California agencies — including departments overseeing insurance, employment development and other state services — continue to advertise positions that offer remote or hybrid work arrangements as of Monday, July 6, according to CalCareers listings.
State jobs are also known for competitive pay and benefits, including health insurance, paid leave and access to the nation’s largest public pension system.
Most positions require specific education, certifications or work experience, which are outlined in each job posting.
Which California state jobs offer remote work?
As of Monday, July 6, these 10 California state job openings listed on CalCareers include telework or hybrid work options:
Agent | Permanent, full time
- Department: Alcoholic Beverage Control
- Location: Contra Costa, Shasta, Santa Clara, San Joaquin, Monterey, Los Angeles, San Diego or Orange counties
- Salary: $6,339 to $10,609 per month
- Application due date: Until the position is filled.
The agent performs investigations related to criminal activity committed by licensed premises.
Duties include developing operation plans and going undercover.

Casualty actuary | Permanent, full time
- Department: Insurance
- Location: Los Angeles, Oakland or Sacramento
- Salary: $11,092 to $14,723 per month
