2 arrested after kicking, peeing on elderly man in SLO County park, police say

Two men were arrested on suspicion of elder abuse after they allegedly beat and urinated on a man in Arroyo Grande on March 20.

At around 1:45 a.m., the Arroyo Grande Police Department responded to a report of an assault at Elm Street Park. Once on scene, officers identified the victim as an elderly unhoused individual, according to a news release.

The man told the police he had been sleeping under the park’s gazebo when he woke up to someone peeing on him, the release said. After he confronted the person, the suspect and a second suspect began “repeatedly” kicking him in the head and chest, according to the police.

The man suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, the release said.

According to the release, the city’s public safety camera system captured footage of the assault, which played a “key component” in the department’s investigation.

Police arrested and booked two suspects into custody on multiple felony charges, the release said.

Malachy Damien Hayes, 18, of Arroyo Grande, was booked on two felony charges, including battery causing serious bodily injury and elder abuse causing serious bodily injury.

Boaz Winslow Brigham, 20, of Arroyo Grande, was booked on three felony charges, including battery causing serious bodily injury, elder abuse, and assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury.

Arroyo Grande police encouraged any community members with information about the incident to contact the department at 805-473-5110.
