Body of girl swept out to sea in Big Sur is found after 3-day search
The body of a 7-year-old girl who was swept out to sea along the Big Sur coast and whose father died trying to rescue her was located after a three-day search.
Her body was found on Sunday by a diver about half a mile north of where she was swept to sea by a 15- to 20-foot wave, a news release from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office identified the girl as Anzi Hu, age 7, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The girl originally went missing on Friday, when a family in distress was reported near the waterline at Garrapata State Park just before 1 p.m., Monterey County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Andres Rosas told The Tribune at the time.
The girl’s father, later identified as 39-year-old Yuji Hu, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was also carried out to sea as he attempted to rescue his daughter. Hu was pulled from the water and given CPR, but died at the hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The girl’s mother was transported to the hospital in stable condition with hypothermia, after she attempted to assist in the rescue but was able to make her way back to shore, the release said. A 2-year-old child was uninjured in the incident.
Authorities continued searching for the missing child through Friday night, Saturday and into Sunday until her body was located around 1:20 p.m. Multiple agencies assisted in the search effort.
The Sheriff’s Office said the family expressed gratitude for all agencies, personnel and community members who assisted in the search. The family asked for privacy and did not wish to make a public statement, the release said.
