Several positions across state departments offer remote work options.

Despite Gov. Gavin Newsom’s return-to-office order, new union agreements allow many state employees to keep working remotely through June 2026.

As of Wednesday, Nov. 5, California was hiring for several full-time positions offering hybrid schedule work options.

State jobs are known for their competitive benefits and enrollment in the nation’s largest public pension plan.

Many positions have specific qualifications, which are linked below.

Which California state jobs offer remote work?

HR professional | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Compensation Insurance Fund
  • Location: Alameda County
  • Salary: $6,031 to $7,547 per month
  • Application due date: Monday, Nov. 10

The human resources professional helps improve the department’s workplace culture by organizing employee events, supporting key projects and creating programs that connect and engage staff.

Telework is available for this position. However, the “successful candidate” must live in California, according to the CalCareers website.

Customer contact center associate | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Public Employees Retirement System
  • Location: Sacramento County
  • Salary: $6,031 to $7,547 per month
  • Application due date: Wednesday, Nov. 12

The customer contact center associate handles tasks to support the department’s customer service goals.

Duties include applying state retirement and health care laws while taking calls to help members, retirees and employers.

This position is “designated as full-time remote, with a requirement to occasionally report to the office,” CalCareers said in the job posting.

Consulting psychologist | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Hospitals
  • Location: Fresno County
  • Salary: $11,904 to $14,290 per month
  • Application due date: Friday, Nov. 28

The consulting psychologist conducts forensic evaluations and risk assessments for patients at Coalinga State Hospital.

Duties include reviewing case files, writing reports and performing other evaluations as needed.

The position primarily works from home, but must travel to the hospital once or twice a month to review files and interview patients, according to CalCareers.

Environmental scientist | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Food and Agriculture
  • Location: Stanislaus County
  • Salary: $4,269 to $8,877 per month
  • Application due date: Until the position is filled.

The environmental scientist conducts inspections and scientific analyses to ensure environmental health and food safety.

This includes making sure meat and poultry facilities follow state and federal rules, and studying the recycling or disposal of inedible materials and animal remains.

Business services technology associate analyst | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Compensation Insurance Fund
  • Locations: Multiple
  • Salary: $4,935 to $8,740 per month

This role helps keep technology and applications running smoothly.

Duties include managing information technology contracts and budgets; working to improve systems; and facilitating processes for better efficiency.

Cloud application developer | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Justice
  • Location: Sacramento County
  • Salary: $8,625 to $11,557 per month

The cloud application developer provides technical and database support.

Duties include helping plan, build and maintain software systems, including off-the-shelf, cloud-based and hosted programs for the department.

Regional underwriting manager | Permanent, full time

The staff services manager helps the department and community partners run programs to reduce gun violence by overseeing office operations and supervising staff.

This is a remote position that can be based anywhere in California, CalCareers said.

Claims liaison specialist | Permanent, full time
