Several California state jobs allow employees to work from home.

Even though Gov. Gavin Newsom’s return-to-office order took effect in July, many state workers can continue working remotely.

The plan to bring most employees back to the office four days a week was delayed by a year for those covered under new union agreements.

After reopening negotiations, Newsom and public employee unions reached deals extending remote work options for many staff, managers and supervisors through June 2026.

As of Thursday, Oct. 9, the state was hiring for several full-time positions that include remote work and hybrid schedule options.

State jobs are known for offering competitive benefits and enrollment in the nation’s largest state public pension plan.

Which California state jobs offer remote work?

Accountant trainee | Permanent, full time

  • Department: General Services
  • Location: Yolo County
  • Salary: $4,442 to $5,296 per month
  • Application due date: Monday, Oct. 27

The accountant trainee helps with basic accounting tasks for different state offices and agencies.

Duties include following state rules, budget guidelines and department policies.

This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule, with up to three days of remote work.

Accounts receivable manager | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Industrial Relations
  • Location: San Francisco County
  • Salary: $7,172 to $8,910 per month

The accounts receivable manager oversees and manages a team that handles billing and payments for several divisions.

Typical tasks with this role include upholding workplace safety and labor standards.

Associate accounting analyst | Permanent, full time

Along with setting up financial systems for new programs, updating procedures and analyzing cash flow, the associate accounting analyst is responsible for making sure all financial work follows state and federal rules.

Budget analyst | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Public Health
  • Location: Contra Costa County
  • Salary: $6,031 to $7,547 per month

The budget analyst handles administrative and analytical work, such as creating reports, managing budgets and tracking spending for the California Public Health Department.

The budget analyst provides recommendations to management and communicate with staff and outside agencies to support planning and decision-making.

Bilingual associate governmental program analyst | Permanent, full time

The project analyst plans and manages projects for the department.

Environmental scientist | Permanent, full time

  • Location: Stanislaus County
  • Salary: $4,269 to $8,877 per month

The environmental scientist conducts inspections and scientific analyses to ensure environmental health and food safety.

This includes making sure meat and poultry facilities follow state and federal rules, and studying the recycling or disposal of inedible materials and animal remains.
