Search called off for 2 missing after boat capsized in Lake Tahoe, killing 6 others

U.S. Coast Guard rescuers suspended their search Sunday for two people lost in Lake Tahoe when their boat capsized in sudden, stormy weather Saturday, killing six aboard and injuring two others.

“Suspending a search is always a difficult decision to make and weighs heavily on each Coast Guard member involved,” said Cmdr. David Herndon, search and rescue mission coordinator, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those involved in the boat capsize.”

Coast Guard personnel officially suspended their mission 10:55 a.m., Sunday, after a 12-hour search that stretched for nearly 400 square miles. Coast Guard personnel from Lake Tahoe were joined in the effort by Coast Guard air crews from McClellan Airport in North Highlands, El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies and California State Parks rangers.

Ten people were aboard the 27-foot Chris-Craft vessel about 3 p.m. when suddenly violent weather over the Sierra Nevada roiled the lake. Coast Guard officials said a large swell toppled the craft off D.L. Bliss State Park.

Swells as high as 8 feet were recorded on the lake when the boat overturned about 3 p.m. Saturday, as winds on the water reached 30 knots, said Coast Guard officials.
